Instagram Reels Are So 2022! New Algorithm Favors Photos Over Videos
We can all take an instantaneous sigh of relief, Instagram is going back to basics in 2023! After a steady push for video content in 2022, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri says the company will value reels and photo content equally. Could this be because of the insane amount of backlash by users? I’m thinking absolutely! In a recent Ask Me Anything session, Mosseri admitted to the platform’s misjudgment of content and said the company is now “rebalancing” things.
Here’s what you need to know about the new Instagram change.
What Are Instagram Reels?
What started as a photo-sharing platform recently turned into a video channel in 2020, with the launch of Instagram Reels. Unlike traditional Instagram posts, Reels are full-screen vertical videos that can be up to 90 seconds long. You can use unique editing tools and audio tracks to make your Reel go viral. Other features of Reels include multiple video clips, filters, captions, interactive backgrounds, stickers and more.
Reels and stories are not the same. Stories disappear after 24 hours; however, a Reel can live on your Instagram feed.
Instagram was so dedicated to their push for Reels that they added sections for the new feature in the app. There is a Reels discovery section, much like the TikTok For You page, that can be accessed by clicking on the Reels icon at the bottom of the Instagram app’s homepage. In addition, you can also view a user’s posted Reels directly on their feed by clicking on the Reels icon on a person’s profile.
The emphasis on Reels threw content creators a major headspin! Many photographers started to see much less engagement and reach with their static image posts and adapted to sharing more video content to keep their audience happy. That is… until now.
The Best Types of Photos to Share on Instagram
Now that we can all get back to our business of using Instagram… like Instagram, what types of photo content does the everchanging app favor? Here’s a list of the best types of photos to share on your feed:
Landscape photography
Aerial and architectural photography
Events and sports photography
Portraits and glamour shots
Macro photography
Abstract photography
Past and present comparisons
Candids
Conceptual photography
Tilt-shift photography
The overall takeaway from the thought leaders at Instagram is that original, creative, authentic content is the most engaging. Add your unique spin to something ordinary and it’s likely to receive stronger engagement and reach.
What Does This Change Mean for Content Creators?
Not much is changing for Instagram users that love creating Reels - go on and do your thing! Reel makers will not be penalized for publishing video content; instead, it just means that static posts will receive just as much reach. Mosseri even advised users that if they don’t start seeing a change in their interactions on the ‘Gram, they should contact the app directly.
